Post #9: The Social Media Marketing Industry


Over the past decade, an invention called social media has been making the rounds on the internet world. Social media began with websites like MySpace and Facebook, which connected people from all over the world in one concentrated space. After a bit of controversy and a few overhauls, social media grew into an enormous space of the internet, now including sites like Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube, Google+ and LinkedIn. The growth of such social media sites describes the current generation of people: we like ourselves and enjoy associating ourselves with others.

That is a key concept that many marketers and advertisers are seeing now. Many are beginning to change their ways of marketing and advertising, such as transitioning from a television media to the internet. And on the internet, they're taking their advertising to where the most people are connecting: social media sites. These marketers are seeing the previously discussed concept of the current generation: we like ourselves and enjoy associating ourselves with others. Marketers and advertisers are grasping this concept thoroughly now (after a few trial and errors), and are seeing a significant amount of success from this.



Statistics from social media sites are astounding for marketers to wrap their heads around. As of October 2012, Facebook had 1 billion monthly users, YouTube had 800 million, and Twitter had 200 million. The top six social media sites can receive on average 400 million monthly users. Never has there been such a concentrated population open to advertisers. It's almost easier than ever before to get the word out to people. Even if the advertisement isn't affective, it still has a chance of reaching millions of people on a daily basis.

Social media are changing the way businesses interact with their customers, and many businesses are jumping on that bandwagon. The internet and social media are rapidly changing the way businesses are doing business. At this pace, it is very possible that businesses will keep all interactions online in the near future.
