Review Questions (p. 35)

#7. Describe the map model of culture. What are its strengths and limitations?
The map model of culture displays how different types and qualities of culture interact. Rather than the hierarchy version, the map model ranks culture as good or bad. The textbook claims it does this "based on a combination of personal taste and aesthetic judgments a society makes at particular historical times. Its strength is that it accounts for the natural variation of tastes that different human beings have. It has a limitation because of people who like older things due to a feeling of nostalgia. These people would rather see culture ranked in a hierarchical model, and dislike a new way of ranking culture.

#9. What are the five steps in the critical process? Which of these is the most difficult and why?
The five steps in the critical process are description, analysis, interpretation, evaluation, and engagement. The most difficult stage in criticism is interpretation because it demands an answer to the "So what?" question. It requires the critic to give it meaning.
